Application Process to Become a Jesuit Volunteer
Fall/Winter
Take the time to talk with friends who have been Jesuit Volunteers (JVs). Speak with a Jesuit Volunteer Corps (JVC) Northwest recruiter about being a JV. Ask questions about the program and what it could mean for you. Find out if JVC Northwest is the right service program for you.
- Read what actual JVs have said about their experience in stories of service.
- Meet with our traveling recruiter, Rachel, during her cross-country tour! Find out if Rachel will visit your school: Spring recruiter schedule.
- Contact the JVC Northwest office to connect with a former or current JV to learn what the experience is like for others.
- Spend time to reflect on the decision to serve.
- Speak with a JVC Northwest staff person about questions you may have about the program at (503) 335-8202.
Spring
Fill out and submit an application. It is helpful to note that the application asks for three references, a copy of your official or unofficial transcripts, and upon acceptance into the program--a brief medical examination. Applications postmarked or received on March 1, 2010, will receive preferred placement opportunities. Applications received after this date will be processed on a rolling basis. Applications are accepted through July.
Upon receipt of your completed application, we will send you detailed information about the screening and placement process, and a JVC Northwest area director will contact you to set up a phone interview.
Discernment packet
Please read the discernment packet before your phone interview. You will be asked to complete the Service Interest Form prior to interview and returned to your interviewer.
Upon conditional acceptance into the program, you will be asked to submit the following materials within two weeks. To minimize a delay in the process, applicants are strongly encouraged to complete these forms early and have them ready to submit. These documents will not be used to determine eligibility for the JVC Northwest program. Acceptance into the program becomes official once all items have been received and approved by JVC Northwest.
Please download, print and mail the following forms to JVC Northwest at P.O. Box 3928, Portland, OR 97208. All documents must be original (no faxes or emails).
2010-11 Forms
Medical Form ( to be completed by a health care professional: doctor or nurse, not related to the applicant)
Health and Wellness Form (to be completed by the applicant)
Drug and Alcohol Policy (signature only)
Covenant (signature only)
Background Check Form (to be completed by the applicant)
You will be asked to identify your top placement choices and JVC Northwest will do its best to honor your preferences. We ask that you be open to serving where your individual skills and talent will be matched to the agency most in need.
From here, an interview will be arranged with a placement that is mutually agreeable for you, JVC Northwest and the placement agency. It is possible that you will interview with more than one agency to find a service opportunity that is the best fit for both you and the agency.
Most placements are finalized by the end of March. Applicants will be accepted until all placements are filled or until the service year begins.
Begin Service
Service begins in early August with Orientation, a week-long introduction to JVC Northwest. This is an exciting and fun week with opportunities for JVs to meet their housemates and experience what it truly means to be a part of JVC Northwest!
