Where We Serve

JVEs work for social and ecological justice in placements serving those marginalized in our society, including people who experience poverty, hunger, disabilities, and abuse, as well as in advocacy and environmental justice organizations. The service sites deliver both direct services and address the structures that affect people who are economically poor. Care is taken in matching a JVE's talents to an organization's needs, but often JVEs discover and develop new skills when they choose to work at projects unrelated to their former job experience.

Some JVEs volunteer at community sites where they have already volunteered for some time, or that they have found recently, and which fit our mission as described above.

JVC Northwest is also very willing to help JV EnCorps members find a service placement. We enjoy a long-standing reputation of placing talented, committed, and well-supported volunteers in critical community work for over 50 years. We will work closely with each JVE to provide opportunities for significant contributions to community nonprofit organizations. Many JVE sites have specific needs and desired skill sets for which they need volunteers. JVEs can apply their professional skills and talents to the work of a service site and simultaneously open themselves up to new works and learn new skills. JVEs work with partner agencies in direct-service roles and in work that fosters structural change for the sake of social and ecological justice.

Some of the pressing community needs and populations that JV EnCorps addresses include:

  • Education, tutoring and mentoring
  • Support services and empowerment for people who are homeless
  • Refugee services
  • Workplace readiness
  • Ecological care and advocacy
  • Community organizing
