volunteers - benefits of service
Many people become Jesuit Volunteers (JV) to make a difference in the lives of others. Along the way, volunteers experience a variety of unexpected gifts that often reveal themselves over the course of a lifetime.
The Jesuit Volunteer Corps (JVC) Northwest experience can open doors to new opportunities. Not only do you receive the obvious benefits such as food and a place to call home, but you also receive a long list of intangible benefits. As soon as you become a JV, you immediately receive support from a large network of current and former JVs.Your life is forever changed by the relationships you form with people who experience life from the margins of our society.
The job experiences gained during service can assist you on your future career path, and new found friendships and relationships with coworkers, clients, and housemates can last a lifetime. You can even connect with other current and Former JVs on Facebook! To join our group, click on the link to JVC Northwest.
For many, what is most appealing about becoming a volunteer with JVC Northwest is the potential for significant personal and professional transformation.
An added benefit of serving in the Northwest is the opportunity to enjoy the region's immense beauty.

JVs receive room and board, medical insurance and a monthly stipend of approximately $80 from their placement agency. There is also an opportunity to receive an AmeriCorps Education award, pending government approval, to help pay off college loans or put toward further schooling. Transportation to and from the work site (could be a bus pass or bicycle) is provided by the placement agency. Volunteers are asked to provide their own travel arrangements to Portland, Ore., for Orientation to JVC Northwest at the beginning of the service year. The placement agency will provide transportation home at the end of the service year.
Living in Community
As a JV, you will live with three to eight other JVs in a simply furnished house or apartment. JVs usually live in low-income, racially diverse neighborhoods. Everyone is responsible for cooking and cleaning duties. Each JV community meets regularly to make shared financial decisions, resolve conflict and divide household chores. Communities meet weekly to pray, gather support from one another and have fun!
What if I have college loans?
As a JV, you may qualify for college loan deferment or forbearance. Check with your lending institution to determine if you qualify and what steps need to be taken to make this possible. Please contact the JVC Northwest office if your lender needs service verification. There is also an opportunity to receive an AmeriCorps Education award, pending government approval, to help pay off college loans.
